NORTH V SOUTH 2008
The North v South Competition seems to have attracted far fewer entries this year. From reports there were only eight entries from the North and twelve from the South. I really feel it’s all down to the theme provided this time –“Faith, Hope & Charity.” Full marks to all those who came up with the ideas and carried them through but I really thought it was such a narrow remit, with little room for maneuver. Considering Epsom Cine & Video Society provided four of the southern entries, it really does seem a poor show. And I have to say it looks even worse for us as not one of ours was in the five chosen out of the twelve to go through to the final. The criticisms are pretty damning, but I put this down to not having enough preparation, both technical and acting. Never mind, considering most of the people involved in these projects are practically novices in this particular field, I think they have gained valuable experience and on top of which, enjoyed taking part.

AFTER GRACE .
This was a nice little film but once again spoiled by the slow and ponderous dialogue in the garden and on the bench. It would have been nice to see close-ups of the faces of the two characters when they finally met rather than a close-up of shaking hands and the slow pan(presumably to show the passing of time) just slowed the film up again.
Harry Lederman.
There seemed little point to this film with no real story to engage the viewer. Technically, the sound was poor, the camera angles felt wrong and the double pan, to indicate the passage of time, did not work.
Alan Tutt.
Sound levels could be improved. Unnecessary panning, other methods could be used to show the passage of time.
Phil Moon.

HEAVEN CAN WAIT.
A short amusing film but the punch line did not make much of an impact with me. If blue screen was used to get the heavenly effect, it didn’t quite come off.
Harry Lederman.
A not bad one joke story let down by obvious graphic compositing. The gate keeper appeared to read his lines. These made the whole film seem amateurish.
Alan Tutt.
Special effect could be better. Acting was a little amateurish.
Phil Moon.

HEAVEN'S MY GOAL.
This film lacked pace and the opening dialogue between the man and the woman was laboured and drawn out. Even older people speak at a normal pace and we don’t need a gap after every word. The camera work was adequate but there were a few sound glitches which should have been sorted out before the film was submitted.
Harry Lederman.
Overlong build up but a funny story, well made and well acted by the main character.
Alan Tutt.
Slightly erratic sound quality. A rather predictable ending.
Phil Moon.

THE REUNION.
This could have been an amusing film if it had been better executed. Although it’s nice to have a little natural background sound during kitchen scene, I found the level of the radio in the opening scene to b intrusive. Something odd happened during Cherry’s speech in the restaurant when it went into a long shot with Cherry in the background no saying what we were hearing.
Harry Lederman.
A neat story, albeit with a sign-posted ending. Good camera work apart from a couple of quirky shots at the ladies table which seemed out of sync and some (the man getting into his car) unnecessary padding.
Alan Tutt.
The sound level of the background radio at the start was too high and thus distracted from the dialogue.
Phil Moon.

All four films produced were either club or member's productions and met the challenge of staying true to the theme of " FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY."
